The Prisoner’s Dream
In Iyorwuese Hagher’s play The Prisoner’s Dream, the theme of the clash between dream and reality, action and inaction, vision and lack of vision is explored. Marina, the prisoner, dreams that he is released from prison to become a king. The angels set him on a throne, and his advisers encourage him to disobey the voice of his subjects. He opts to take a position against his people. The play is heavily political, showcasing Hagher’s trenchant condemnation of the anti-people policies of politicians.
Iyorwuese Hagher is one of Africa’s finest playwrights. He is a multi-talented playwright and novelist and was Nigeria’s Ambassador to Canada and Mexico. He lives in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
